The Industrial Metaverse: A $600 Billion Horizon by 2032

Industrial Metaverse Market Poised for Explosive Growth

This week, Meticulous Research released a comprehensive report titled “Industrial Metaverse Market—Global Opportunity Analysis and Industry Forecasts to 2032,” which emphasizes the remarkable expansion of the industrial metaverse sector. The market is projected to attain approximately $48.2 billion by 2025 and is anticipated to surge to $600.6 billion by 2032, reflecting a compound annual growth rate of 20.5% throughout the forecast period from 2025 to 2032. The industrial metaverse, which encompasses shared real-time 3D (RT3D) immersive applications, assets, and services, finds extensive application in industries such as manufacturing, transportation, and oil and gas. Here, high-quality simulations are increasingly utilized as effective tools for cost-saving during complex projects and operations.

Smart Glasses Expected to Drive Industrial Metaverse Experience

As the industrial metaverse continues to evolve, a key question arises regarding the hardware that will facilitate its use. Current trends indicate that smart glasses are likely to be at the forefront. The International Data Corporation (IDC) has reported a notable rebound in headset purchases, as detailed in its Worldwide Quarterly Augmented and Virtual Reality Headset Tracker. The latest findings reveal an 18.1% year-over-year growth in the AR/VR headset market during the most recent quarter, with Meta dominating the market and securing 50.8% of the share.

Ramon T. Llamas, Research Director for IDC’s AR/VR team, remarked that “the worldwide AR/VR headset market is reaching a critical tipping point.” He elaborated that pure virtual reality (VR) had once been the market’s highlight, with key players like Meta, HTC, and Sony controlling most of the market volume. However, this segment is expected to decline in the coming years. Similarly, while pure augmented reality (AR) had shown promise with strong support from Microsoft, its expected market share is now projected to be minimal.

XREAL has emerged as a significant player in the market, largely due to its sales of smart glasses. Meanwhile, Viture, another vendor in the smart glasses space, reported a remarkable 268.4% growth year-over-year, and TCL also experienced a notable increase of 91.6%. Interestingly, Apple has not appeared among the leading vendors this quarter, as IDC observed a shift towards optical see-through glasses.

Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC’s Worldwide Mobile Device Trackers, added that the market is clearly transitioning toward more immersive and adaptable experiences. While Meta remains the leader, the rise of brands like Viture and XREAL indicates that innovation in design and user experience is appealing to consumers. The forthcoming growth wave is expected to be fueled by mixed and extended reality, especially as artificial intelligence (AI) and Android XR platforms continue to mature.

Future Projections for AR/VR/MR Devices

According to IDC, although shipments of AR/VR/MR devices are projected to decrease by 12% in 2025 due to delays in product launches, a significant rebound is forecasted for 2026, with an anticipated growth of approximately 87%. From 2025 to 2029, the market is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 38.6%.

Llamas concluded that mixed reality (MR) is likely to receive a warm welcome, especially as many VR companies pivot toward this area, and new entrants like Apple join the fray. Extended reality (ER) headsets are expected to gain popularity primarily among gamers. Additionally, the influence of Google’s Android XR on both MR and ER should not be underestimated, as more vendors are likely to adopt this new platform, similar to how numerous smartphone manufacturers embraced Android. While the XR market is developing gradually and often repetitively, it suggests that transformative technology is imminent. Although widespread adoption may take time, upcoming events such as Meta Connect are expected to serve as vital venues for reinforcing long-term visions for XR innovation.
